Ryder Davis, a freshman at Keys High School, is no stranger to the football field. Hailing from Welling, Oklahoma, the 15-year-old quarterback has been throwing a football since he could walk. “Ever since I can remember, I’ve known how to throw a football,” Ryder said. His passion for the game began early, fueled by watching his older cousin play football in high school. “That’s what inspired me to play football,” he recalled.
As a first-year varsity player, Ryder’s role as quarterback carries significant weight, but it’s a responsibility he embraces with focus and faith. “I prepare by first praying to God and thanking him for every opportunity he gives me,” Ryder explained, emphasizing his commitment to both the sport and his spirituality. His family, especially his mom and dad, are his biggest influences. “They have always taught me that none of this would be possible without God,” Ryder shared, underscoring the importance of staying grounded on and off the field. “They have always been there for me and looked out for my best interests. They have always taught me that none of this would be possible without God which is very true. Not only that, they also have taught me to stay on the right paths in life and keep my head on straight.”
Team chemistry is key for Ryder and his fellow players at Keys. “We spend a lot of time together on and off the field,” he said. The unity within the team shines during challenging moments, like when Ryder led the team to victory in the fourth quarter, down by one point. “I overcame it by praying and just telling God to help me make the right decisions,” he said.
Ryder’s goals for the 2024 season are clear: “I want to take Keys to the playoffs,” he said. Beyond football, he envisions a future where he continues to excel, with hopes of playing D1 football and eventually becoming a football coach. For now, though, Ryder remains focused on the game he loves and the support of his community, which he says has played a big role in the success of Keys football. “The community support means a lot for my team. This year, we just got a brand-new turf field and without our community, we never would have gotten that.”
